Solar Geoeningeering and International Humanitarian Law

Climate Change is a growing issue in the world, and scientists have been trying to find a way to fix it for a few decades now. However, there's actually a potential solution that's already been discovered: solar geoengineering.

Basically, this method reflects solar radiation back into space, which would help reduce global warming on our planet quickly and cheaply. So why haven’t countries employed the technology as soon as it was discovered?

Link to armed conflict

This method has a big impact on the entire world. On the surface, this seems great because it would reduce global warming everywhere. However, this means that every country has to agree to use solar geoengineering before it is employed. The method reduces solar power throughout the world, and there are some countries that rely on solar power. Therefore, some countries wouldn’t be willing to employ the technology.

If just one country disagrees with solar geoengineering and another country still decides to use it, it could lead major disagreements and even armed conflict. So how can we use this solution without conflict? The best way is for countries to work together and coordinate before using the technology. Agreements need to be made between all countries before taking any further actions.

Prevention methods

If armed conflict does occur because of disagreement, the principles of Interantional Humanitarian Law would come in role. Countries should try to reduce unnecessary damage, and follow proportionality rules so the conflict’s destruction isn’t amplified.

Overall, this technology is a potential climate change solution, but requires many agreements between countries before employed. If employed without agreement, it could lead to armed conflict between countries, creating another issue.
